Dr. Michael Edwards, educator and founder of Bioinfo Solutions in Parker, Colorado, will present the Collegiate Peaks Forum Series lecture “Understanding Your DNA: The Past, Present, and Future of Human Genetic Research.” The lecture is free to the public and refreshments will be served.

Parking for the Surf Hotel is north of the Eddyline Restaurant. When coming in on South Main Street, turn right on Swift Circle (there is a stop sign there). The dirt parking lot is on your left. Walk across South Main Street to the Surf Hotel.

Information contained in the 6 billion bits of code stored in our DNA can be used to trace ancestry across the planet, to convict someone of murder, or to predict the potential for a terminal disease in later life. The cost of determining this genetic code for the average person has previously been prohibitive, but recent scientific advances have now made it feasible for many U.S. citizens to know their genetic makeup.

Dr. Edwards is the founder and CEO of the data analytics company, Bioinfo Solutions LLC, where he specializes in extracting wisdom out of a sea of information. He has over seventeen years’ experience working with array-based genomic studies and analyzing next-generation sequencing data from both plant and animal species. Recent projects have included phenotyping cannabis strains based on gene expression and assessing cancer risk based on both genetic and clinical markers.

Dr. Edwards is active in teaching science and math at all levels, from instructing high school students in ‘big data’ analysis to holding workshops for clinical oncologists interested in using genomics in their cancer research. Since 2014, he has taught an annual, week-long workshop in cancer genomics to medical oncologists from around the country for the American Association of Cancer Research (AACR). A collection of his previous lectures and courses can be found on his YouTube channel, “Michael Edwards Bioinformatics.” Dr. Edwards’s Collegiate Peaks Forum Series lecture will summarize the current state of genetic research and explain how all this information will completely change the way we do science and medicine in the future.
