🚙Our Favorite 4 x 4 Jeep Roads

Colorado is one of the best places in the nation to go Jeeping. With over 50 14,000-foot peaks and mountains in every direction, the Centennial State offers some of the most beautiful—and hard to reach—landscapes this country has to offer.

This July, when the wildflowers are at their peak, head out on a Jeep adventure for some of the best scenery you’ll ever see.

The following are some of our favorite places to go Jeeping in Colorado:

Alpine Loop Scenic Byway

The Alpine Loop Scenic Byway is a network of four-wheel drive roads that connect Lake City, Ouray, and Silverton. It traverses passes up to 12,800 feet while showcasing old mines, ghost towns, natural wonders, beautiful wildflowers, and abundant wildlife.

Nearest town: Lake City

Medano Pass Primitive Road

Drop into the Great Sand Dunes National Park by going over Medano Pass Primitive Road, one of Colorado’s most renowned off-roading trails. Drive past creeks and canyons and over a 10,000-foot pass before descending into the soft sand of the Great Sand Dunes.

Nearest town: Westcliffe or Walsenburg

Colorado State Forest

50 miles of off-road trails await Jeepers at the Colorado State Forest. If you’ve ever wanted to spot a moose, you might be in luck. The Colorado Forest is known for its large moose population.

Nearest town: Walden

St. Mary’s Trail

St. Mary’s Trail is actually a sprawling network of trails filled with amazing mountains views. Yankee Hill is perhaps its most famous trail as it is very steep and rocky but offers an incredible view of St. Mary’s Glacier.

Nearest town: Central City

Mosquito Pass
This challenging road is the highest pass in the state open to motorized travel. Its rocky terrain offers the perfect challenge for your high-clearance Jeep, with unmatched scenic views over an alpine environment. Since it can be closed at any time due to snow or inclement weather, this pass is the ideal summer trail trip. But be wary, it is not for the faint of heart.

Nearest town: Leadville
