Skijoring is a unique sport here in Colorado, made popular by the Leadville Skijoring event that happens in X. But for many who may wish to see what it’s all about, Leadville is far away, with travel made more difficult because of closed passes and snowy roads.
The good news for our western Colorado friends is that the Ouray County Rodeo Association hosts its own Skijoring event in Ridgeway, and it’s just as fabulous as the famed Leadville event, only in Ridgeway, you’re surrounded by the stunning San Juan mountains for breathtaking views in all directions.
On January 11th and 12th experience this exciting sport that combines cowboys riding horses while pulling skiers through a challenging course of gates, jumps, and obstacles.
This year will be Ridgway’s fourth year hosting this event and they are ramping things up! The course design this winter will be different than anything ever seen before in the history of Skijoring. For example, Snowboard, Novice, Sport, and Open will all run different courses and the track will be more technically difficult for all competitors.
The Ridgeway Skijoring event is paired with the UtePils Festival, a beer festival featuring microbrews from around the area. Beer will be poured on Saturday and Sunday with up to 15 different breweries to choose from.
Food and merchandise vendors will also be on hand all weekend long to keep you full and satisfied and to give you a chance to walk away with some cool Skijoring gear.
